Agapito S. Luera, 85 years of age, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 4, 2023 at his residence with his loving family at his bedside. He was born in El Rancho “Los Orcones”, in Duval County, Texas on September 20, 1937, to his parents, Baleriano Castillo Luera and Fransica Soto Luera. As the fourth child of 16 he helped his parents tending to the animals and plowing the fields, with such a large family they always had plenty to do. He learned to play the guitar and accompanied his cousin to play at clubs. Agapito fell in love with Santos Garza, they later married and had three children, Ester, Mateo and Inez. His fondest memories of early in their marriage was when they went dancing with Santos. The family traveled to Ohio, California, Florida, North and South Dakota, as migrant workers, then settling in San Diego, Texas.
He was employed with Edwards Furniture, Alice Auction Barn, and worked for various oil field company’s, Mohawk, Dawson, Well Tech, Key Energy, as a supervisor and consultant. Upon retiring, Agapito and Santos purchased the Alice Civic Center on Hwy 44 where he enjoyed the parties and weddings held there.
He took his children camping and fishing at Lake Mathis. Agapito was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life and tending to his cattle at his ranch in Seven Sisters. He and his wife attending as many birthday parties ad sporting events of their grandchildren and great grandchildren as they could. Agapito was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle who will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Baleriano Castillo Luera and Fransica Soto Luera; his sibling, Baleriano S. Luera Jr., Cenovio S. Luera, Juana S. Salazar, Victoria S. Luera, Josephina S. Vasquez, Fransica S. Edwards, Teresa S. Gonzalez, Antonia S. Luera, Baleriano S. Luera Jr., Maria Elena Luera, Felix Luera, Jose Angel Luera, brothers-in-law, Alfredo Morin, Edwardo Salazar, Samuel Resendez; parental grandparents, Fernando (Rocha) Luera and Juana Castillo; maternal grandparents, Blas Alvarez Soto and Ester Diaz Guerra.
Agapito is survived by his wife of 65 years of marriage, Santos Garza Luera of Alice, Texas; his son, Mateo (Nora) Luera of Alice, Texas; two daughters, Ester (Pete) Gonzalez of San Antonio, Texas; Inez (Noe) Cedillo Jr. of Lindale, Texas; three siblings, Alicia S. Morin, Carmen L. Resendez, Adelita L. Celia; eight grandchildren, Celeste (Andrew) Ralda, Cathy (Monico) Cerda Jr., Matthew (Debbie) Luera, David Luera, Ernest (Tonya) Villarreal, Vanessa L. Trevino, Christopher Noe (Becky) Cedillo, Issac Cedillo; 15 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with Chapel Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. that day. Services will conclude at the funeral home.
