Gilbert Nieves Saenz
Freer – The Honorable Duval County Judge Gilbert N. Saenz passed unexpectedly on October 16, 2021 while enjoying his life to the fullest capacity. He was born on October 30, 1976 to his parents, Pablo Saenz, Jr. and Thelma U. Saenz. He graduated from Freer High School and Oberlin College with honors. After earning his Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law, he served in the US Navy Judge Advocate General Corps. He spent his career working toward justice for all as a JAG Officer, public school teacher, school board member, attorney, and Duval County Judge. He was a member and active supporter of numerous social and charitable organizations.
Gil and Savannah cherished their life together, just as Gil made a point to simply enjoy the moment with all those he loved. He was the most amazing husband, father, and friend the world could have given us.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pablo Saenz, Jr.
Gil is survived by his wife Savannah Smith; his daughters, Braylynn Lewis Saenz and Ariza Talip Saenz; his mother, Thelma U. Saenz; and his siblings, Sylvia (Sonny) Rodriguez, Selda Saenz (Desi de la Garza), Sara (Celso) Oliveira, and Pablo Saenz, III (Joe Hernandez).

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Freer, Texas. Military Honors will follow.
