Margarita Couling Hinojosa (Wita) 101 years old was called home to be with our Lord on Friday, January 19, 2024 surrounded by her family members at Windsor Nursing Home in San Diego, Texas. She was born on November 28, 1922 to Mike Couling and Natividad Valerio Couling in Alice, Texas. She was a graduate of Benavides High School class of 1941. Margarita was a devote member of St. Rose De Lima Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar and Rosery Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a CCD teacher for several years. She loved taking care of her family, cooking, and baking. She was known for her delicious cinnamon rolls and her special Cinnamon Chocolate Cake. She was a member of a regional Cactus Club and created a recipe for a cactus pie, which she received compliments on from a chef from the Houston area. Her delicious cactus pie recipe was published in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine. Margarita enjoyed playing the piano, singing, dancing, gardening, crocheting and sewing. She spent a lot of time helping her husband at the ranch with chores and preparing meals over an open fire.
Margarita was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and great great great grandmother, sister, and aunt. Margarita was a very kind and loving person who embraced anyone and everyone who crossed her path. She was always willing to help anyone who needed a kind word or gesture. She had a great devotion to the Scared Heart of Jesus and the Scared Heart of Mary and shared this devotion with all. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends who will always cherish the precious memories she left behind.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years of marriage, Gilberto Amado Hinojosa Sr., her parents, 2 sisters Pauline C. (Ramos) Alaniz and Emma C. Martine, and 2 brothers, Rodulfo Couling and Jessie Couling.
Margarita is survived by two sons, Gilberto A. (Maria Ofira) Hinojosa, Jr. of Freer, Texas; Edmundo C. (Ludivina) of Benavides, Texas; two daughters, Margarita H. (Leonel) Canales of Benavides, Texas and Anita H. (Robert) Hookstra of San Leon, Texas; five sisters, Fidela C. Salinas, Minerva C. Carrillo, Edna C. Pena of Benavides, Texas; Dora Mae C. Canales of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Eva C. Goulding of Dallas, Texas; 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 18 great great grandchildren, and 2 great great great grandchidren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas. The Holy Rosary will follow at 10:00 a.m. that morning. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at Santa Rose De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Benavides, Cemetery, Benavides, Texas.
