Nicolas “Nick” Jesus Cervantes, Sr., 92 years of age, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 in Edinburg, Texas. Nick was born in Benavides, Texas on September 1, 1930 to Jesus Cervantes and Petra O. Cervantes.
Nick worked in the oil field for over 36 years. Working at Hiawatha Oil Co., Sinclair Oil and Gas, Atlantic Oil and Gas, Arco Oil and Gas, Vastar Resource Oil and Gas Co. During this time he also managed to do his ranching which he loved with a passion. He started this in 1954 in Benavides with land that he would rent and finally in 1961 with money he had been saving, he was able to purchase some land of his own. Even at the age of 91 years, he still did ranch work and enjoyed doing it.
His other passion was the love of horses and roping with his friends in Benavides and the surrounding area. He enjoyed spending time with his family and with his grandchildren. He was an avid follower of the Dallas Cowboys football team which he loved to see when they played.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Juanita, along with his brothers, Juanito, Ramon and Mauricio Cervantes.
Nick leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Anna Maria Cervantes of Edinburg, Texas; one daughter, Velma Cervantes of Edinburg, Texas; two sons, Nicolas J. Cervantes Jr. of Edinburg, Texas and Jose Luis “Louie” Cervantes of Benavides, Texas; his grandchildren, Nicolas III, Adrian, Nicole, Natalie, Maegan and Jeffery; great grandchildren, Zoe, Zuri, Nicolas IV, Devin, Isabella and Maverick.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas. A Rosary will be resided at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. that day. Interment will follow at Benavides Cemetery in Benavides, Texas.
