To many around Freer, Valdemar “Blackie” García Perez was a warm-hearted man who always had a kind word and smile to share with all. Having never met a stranger, Blackie could share a story with both a stranger and friend alike. He was a devoted husband, an amazing father, and a proud grandfather. On March 07, 2023, Blackie joined his loving wife in eternal rest.
Blackie was born in on April 17th, 1945 in La Rosita, Texas. He attended Freer High School and used his reputation for being a friendly, respectable man to have a great career at Hunter’s Exxon, Western Oilfield Services, G&G Construction, Hancock Construction, and Straight Line Construction. He also devoted over 10 years of his life as a firefighter and driver for the Freer Volunteer Fire Department. His wisdom guided him as a mentor to his friends, nieces, nephews, and the young men who entered the oilfield. His impact could be felt by all.
Blackie was preceded in death by beloved wife of 47 years – Alicia Peña Perez; his parents, Benito and Isabel (Garcia) Perez Sr.; brothers, Salvador Perez, Emilio Perez, and Leon Perez; nephew, Ramon “Hound” Perez.
Blackie is survived by children – his precious daughter, Jamie (Jon) Linscomb; namesake and loyal son, Valdemar Perez, Jr.; twin brother, Benito Perez; sister, Leonor (Leo) Rangel; loving grandchildren, Jodi (Anthony Nall) Linscomb and Bo Linscomb; sister in-law, Adelina “Nina” Perez; longtime caregiver, Roelia Perez; and numerous nephews and nieces.
In short, Blackie was everything a real man should and could be. Today we lament over the passing of an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and tata.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Garza Funeral Home in Freer, Texas with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 13, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Freer, Texas. Interment will follow at Hahl Cemetery in Freer, Texas.
