Robert “Bobby” Daniel Herrera, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on February 4, 2023 at the age of 89. Born January 3, 1934 in Alice, Texas to Daniel B. and Dora V. Herrera.
Bobby was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend who enjoyed golfing, fishing, and woodwork. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He proudly served in Korea in an Engineer Aviation Maintenance Company, known as SCARWAF, repairing heavy equipment for the Army, Air Force, and the Navy Seabees. He graduated from William Adams High School, Class of 1953, and attended Texas A&I College majoring in business.
As Social Service Supervisor for the Texas Department of Human Resources, Robert was instrumental in establishing the food stamp program in Jim Wells and Duval counties. He was blessed to work with an exceptional staff during his 21 year tenure.
Bobby was one of the Founders of St. Joseph’s Knights of Columbus Council 3169 in Alice, Tx. He was an active member serving for 60 years. He was past Grand-Knight, Director of Membership and held several other offices. His last appointment was as Historian. He was a proud Honorary Life Member.
He served as Board of Director of the Alice Boys Club; Vice-President of the Texas Public Employees Association, Alice-Laredo Chapter; a past member of the Community Education District-Wide Advisory Council; and member of VFW Post 8621.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Dora Herrera; parents-in-law, Raymundo and Minnie Treviño; daughter-in-law, Adriana Herrera; sister-in-law, Esperanza Treviño Stimets; and brothers-in-law, Juan Treviño, Gabriel Chapa and Robert Stimets.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Anna Treviño Herrera; daughter, Teresa “Terri” (Jimmy) Diaz; three sons: Michael (Bonnie†) Herrera, John Herrera, and Edward “Eddie” Herrera; his sisters: Ruth Herrera and Sylvia (Gabriel†) Chapa; sisters-in-law, Gloria Treviño and Lydia Treviño; his grandchildren: Raymond Herrera, Alexandra Diaz Chaparro, Alexandria Herrera Freeman, Sierra Diaz, Robert Herrera, Kathryn Herrera, Eric Diaz, and Ben Herrera; numerous nieces, nephews, an uncle and cousins that were special to him and his pet companion Rascal Herrera.
Family will be receiving friends beginning at 5:00pm on Friday, February 10, 2023, with a Rosary recited at 7:00pm at Treviño Funeral Home, 120 E Front St., Alice, Tx.
The funeral cortege will depart the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Saturday, February 11, 2023, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice, Tx.
Military honors and presentation of the flag will follow the Mass outside of St. Joseph Catholic Church and will conclude services. Committal services will be held at a later date.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Herrera, John Herrera, Edward Herrera, Raymond Herrera, Jimmy Diaz, Robert Herrera, Eric Diaz, and Ben Herrera. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Vincent Chaparro and Greg Freeman.
